The California Zephyr is a passenger train that travels daily between Chicago and San Francisco. The 2,438 mile route is Amtrak’s longest, and passes through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. Once known as “the most talked-about train in America,” its first journey took place on March 20, 1949. Glamorous hostesses known as Zephyrettes ensured that passengers were well taken care of and had a memorable trip. The original Zephyr ran for 21 years to the day, ceasing operations in 1970, but was revived in 1983 after the formation of Amtrak. Featuring domed observation cars, Zephyr passengers travel through America’s heartland, over the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada, across magnificent deserts and plains to the West Coast.
